(VAN) In its first forecast for the 2025 EU-27+UK grain crop, COCERAL foresees a 7% increase in production over the previous year.
The European association that focuses on agricultural trade, which released its forecast on Dec. 19, projects this year’s total grains output at 297.8 million tonnes, up from 278.5 million in 2024. Widespread weather problems this year caused total grains output in the EU-27+UK to drop 7% below the five-year average and to the lowest level in the last 10 years.
Leading the way in the anticipated production resurgence is wheat (excluding durum), which is expected to increase from 125.5 million tonnes to 140.4 million, mainly because of a larger planted area and a return to normal yields in Western Europe after the disappointing crop in 2024, COCERAL said.
Barley production in the EU-27+UK is forecast to reach 59.7 million tonnes, up from 57.3 million in 2024, it said.
The EU-27+UK 2025 corn crop is seen increasing year on year to 61.9 million tonnes, up from 60.2 million, with a much larger crop in the Balkan countries but slightly lower production in Germany and France, COCERAL said.
The rapeseed crop is forecast to recover from 18.3 million tonnes in 2024 to 20.3 million mainly because of a return to a normal planting pattern in Romania and Bulgaria and a recovery in yields in France and Germany, the association said.
