The irrigation system and boat locks bring fresh water to serve tens of thousands of hectares of aquaculture in Bac Lieu, with a total cost of more than 1,450 billion VND.
The project has just been approved by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, including building 2 boat locks on the Bac Lieu – Ca Mau canal, Gia Rai and Vam Leo towns in Vinh Loi district; 7 culverts and pumping stations on canals in Vinh Loi district.
When completed, the freshwater regulation system will serve shrimp farming in the dry season for about 13,000 hectares in Bac Lieu City and Hoa Binh district; 5,000 hectares for rice and shrimp farming along the Ca Mau – Bac Lieu canal. The project also provides fresh water for 43,000 hectares of aquaculture in the south of Highway 1; Protect infrastructure for urban areas along National Highway 1 such as Bac Lieu City, Gia Rai town, Hoa Binh town.
Chairman of Bac Lieu Provincial People’s Committee Pham Van Thieu said that the irrigation system is currently outdated, and getting water for shrimp farming is difficult. The above project will block the Ca Mau canal and store fresh water in the Bac Lieu – Ca Mau canal by taking freshwater from the Hau River in the direction from Phung Hiep to serve the province’s aquaculture. The province will implement the project in the period 2021-2025 and 2026-2030.
Bac Lieu is one of three localities with the highest shrimp farming area and output in the country, reaching more than 140,000 hectares. Recently, the government has proposed many solutions to turn the province into the center of the shrimp industry in the West.
