(VAN) The 5 largest coffee-supplying countries to China in 2024 are Brazil, Colombia, Vietnam, Ethiopia, and Indonesia.

China’s total amount of imported coffee in 2024 reached approximately 191,000 tons, worth more than 972 million USD. Compared to 2023, the import volume increased by 24%, while the value increased by 21.5%. However, the average price decreased slightly by 2.1%, reaching 5,095 USD/ton.

In 2024, China imported coffee from 58 countries and territories around the world. Of which the 5 largest coffee-supplying countries to China are Brazil, Colombia, Vietnam, Ethiopia, and Indonesia.

Brazil – No.1 supplier

Brazil is China’s largest coffee supplier in 2024 with 75,634 tons, worth nearly 302 million USD, up 26.9% in volume and 36.4% in value compared to 2023. Brazil’s coffee market share in China’s total imports increased from 38.72% in 2023 to 39.62% in 2024.

Brazil’s total coffee output in the 2024-2025 crop year (from October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2025) is expected to reach 66.4 million bags, 0.2% higher than the previous crop year.

Colombia – strong competitor

In 2024, China imported 38,165 tons of coffee from Colombia, worth nearly 190 million USD, up 77.1% in volume and 71.3% in value compared to 2023. Colombia’s coffee market share in China’s total imports increased from 14% in 2023 to 19.9% in 2024.

In 2024, Colombia produced 13.99 million green coffee bags (60 kg type), an increase of 23% compared to 2023. This is the best harvest in the last 5 years and is the highest output since 2019.

Vietnam – great leap forward

Vietnam is the third largest coffee supply market for China in 2024, reaching 24,100 tons, worth approximately 101 million USD, up 65.8% in volume and 169.8% in value compared to 2023.

Vietnam’s coffee market share in China’s total imports rose from 9.44% in 2023 to 12.62% in 2024. The average price of 4,176 USD/ton (a sharp increase of 62.7%) shows the trend of shifting to the high-quality coffee segment. This is a very positive signal for Vietnam’s coffee industry. In particular, Vietnam’s coffee exports are expected to increase by 1.8 million bags in 2025 to 24.4 million bags thanks to improved supply.

Vietnam is having a great advantage thanks to reasonable prices, improved quality, and stable output.

Ethiopia – the highest average price

In fourth place, Ethiopia exported 16,236 tons of coffee to China, with a total value of more than 102 million USD in 2024. The average price is 6,310 USD/ton, the highest among the 5 leading coffee suppliers to China. This may also be the reason why China’s coffee imports from Ethiopia in 2024 fell by 27.3%, and the value also decreased by 29.1% compared to the previous year.

Coffee is one of the most important agricultural products in the world. Ethiopia is the origin place of Arabica coffee (Coffea Arabica L.) and has a variety of genetic resources. Ethiopia’s coffee output reaches about 400,000–550,000 tons/year, depending on the weather and land conditions. Coffee, Ethiopia’s main export item, is the backbone of the country’s economy, largely grown in the South, Southwest, and East of the country.

Indonesia – high quality, reduced output

Ranking fifth is Indonesia, with over 7,144 tons of coffee exported to China in 2024, worth more than 45 million USD. Although the import volume decreased by 23.1%, the value increased by 27%, reflecting the trend of China importing higher-quality coffee from Indonesia.

Indonesia’s coffee output in the 2024-2025 crop year is expected to recover to 10.9 million bags (60 kg type) thanks to favorable weather, although the harvest in South Sumatra has been slowed down.

The strong growth of Vietnam and Colombia shows the trend of expanding coffee supply for the Chinese market. Brazil still keeps its leading position, but the gap with competitors is narrowing. Vietnam is having a great advantage thanks to reasonable prices, improved quality, and stable output.

In China, coffee consumption has increased by nearly 150% over the past 10 years and is forecast to reach 6.3 million bags (60 kg type) in the 2024-2025 crop year. In the context of increasing coffee consumption in China, this is an opportunity for Vietnam to boost exports, improve brand value, and expand market share. If Vietnamese coffee continues to be invested in quality and strong brand construction, it can completely rise to a higher position in the coming years.
