Global coffee prices surged again today due to lower-than-normal rainfall in Brazil’s key coffee-growing regions.
Coffee exports from Brazil have declined, contributing to the price increase. Last week, Cecafe reported that in April, Brazil’s green coffee bean exports fell by 28% year-on-year, down to just 3.05 million bags. From January to April, total coffee exports dropped 15.5% compared to the same period last year, reaching 13.2 million bags.
“Brazil’s ports are currently operating at full capacity—outdated equipment, lack of maintenance, and underinvestment have created an unsustainable situation,” Veraldo stated. In March, Brazil failed to export 637,767 bags of coffee—equivalent to around 1,932 containers—due to logistics bottlenecks, resulting in estimated losses of approximately $1.568 million, according to Cecafe.
Thus, global coffee prices on May 20, 2025, rose sharply compared to yesterday.
