(VAN) Viet Nam’s first shipment of fresh pomelos has officially entered the Australian market, opening up major opportunities for the fruit sector, affirming its ability to meet high standards, and promoting sustainable exports.
For the first time, fresh pomelos from Viet Nam have officially entered Australia, one of the world’s most demanding markets for plant quarantine and biosecurity. This milestone is the result of a long negotiation process, in which the Plant Production and Protection Department (PPPD) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment played a key role in developing technical dossiers and fulfilling all requirements necessary to open the market.

Beyond securing an import agreement, preparations for the first shipment required close coordination among multiple stakeholders. From growing areas and packaging facilities to post-harvest treatment units and logistics providers, all parties had to strictly comply with technical standards set by the Australian side. In particular, requirements on traceability, pest control, and irradiation treatment were implemented in a synchronous manner to ensure product quality upon arrival to consumers.

Immediately after importation, the products were introduced at Sydney Market, a major agricultural distribution hub, enabling Vietnamese pomelos to directly access importers and local consumers.
This event not only carries commercial significance but also serves as clear evidence of the Vietnamese agricultural sector’s capacity to meet international standards. At the same time, it reflects the effective coordination among management agencies, businesses, and international technical support organizations throughout the market access process.

Affirming quality, expanding long-term export prospects
Dong Thap province currently has 16 growing areas with 22 codes qualified for export to markets such as the U.S. and South Korea. Notably, the province has its first pomelo-growing area eligible for export to Australia, an important foundation for further market expansion in the coming period
For Vietnamese pomelos to be imported into Australia, each shipment must undergo strict border inspections. Australian authorities conduct document checks, including phytosanitary certificates, while carrying out on-site assessments of packaging, labeling, and storage conditions. Besides, product samples are taken for pest testing, with sample sizes potentially reaching hundreds of fruits for large shipments.
These strict requirements compel the domestic production chain to undergo comprehensive upgrades, from cultivation to post-harvest stages. Farmers and enterprises must adhere to safe production practices, minimize chemical residues, and adopt advanced pest management measures. The issuance of growing area codes, packaging facility codes, and traceability systems has become mandatory, contributing to enhancing transparency and product credibility.
Following the first shipment, a commercial consignment of approximately 5 tons is being prepared, using raw materials sourced from Dong Thap. This demonstrates enormous potential for expanding pomelo exports, provided that the production chain continues to maintain and further improve quality standards.

The initial success of pomelo not only creates opportunities for this product itself but also generates spillover for other Vietnamese fruits. This serves as a crucial foundation for Vietnamese agricultural products to penetrate deeper into premium markets, where added value is high but requirements are also stringent.
In the long term, successfully conquering the Australian market is expected to drive the fruit sector toward a more modern, sustainable restructuring. As international standards become a ‘passport’ for market access, farmers, cooperatives, and enterprises are required to shift their production mindset, moving toward quality rather than chasing output.
It can be said that the milestone of the first pomelo shipment exported to Australia is not merely a single export event but also a signal that Vietnamese agricultural products are gradually elevating their position on the global trade map. If close value chain linkages continue to be maintained and international standards are met, Dong Thap pomelo in particular, and Vietnamese fruits in general, can fully expand their market share in demanding markets in the near future.
