According to data from India’s Ministry of Commerce, India’s pepper exports in the first 11 months of 2024 reached 18,196 tons, up 30% compared to 2023. However, during the same period, the country also imported 43,879 tons of various types of pepper, marking a 37.8% increase.
The primary suppliers were Sri Lanka and Vietnam, with volumes of 21,894 tons and 9,911 tons, respectively, rising by 2.5% and 75.4% year-over-year. The Hindu Business Line reported that while Indian black pepper remains crucial in global trade, its exports have declined over the past decades.
Research from Kerala Agricultural University indicates that duty-free black pepper imports from Vietnam via Sri Lanka under the South Asian Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA) have made imported pepper cheaper than domestic supplies.
As a result, exporters specializing in value-added products are increasingly reliant on imported pepper, leading to lower market prices in India and negatively impacting small-scale farmers.
Thus, global pepper prices on February 11, 2025, showed uneven fluctuations compared to yesterday.
