Global coffee prices reversed sharply lower today, with Robusta leading the losses after plunging as much as 7.5%, erasing the strong gains recorded in the previous session.

On July 6, coffee prices surged mainly due to buying by speculative funds. However, analysts believe the rally was likely short-lived. According to Reuters, downward pressure remains as Brazil, the world’s largest coffee producer, enters the harvest season for what is expected to be a bumper crop, bringing abundant supplies to the market.

Mr. Ilya Byzov, Quantitative Trading Specialist at Sucafina, said Brazilian farmers are likely to accelerate sales if futures prices remain at elevated levels, although investment flows into the soft commodities sector may not have completed their portfolio reallocation.

Supply prospects were further reinforced after Caferon forecast that Rondonia State would harvest approximately 3 million bags of Robusta coffee in the 2026 crop year, exceeding Conab’s estimate of 2.77 million bags and marking an increase of nearly 30% from the previous season. The higher output is supported by favorable weather conditions and the widespread adoption of drip irrigation systems, which have boosted yields to around 64 bags/ha, among the highest in the world.

Despite the favorable production outlook, Brazil’s coffee industry continues to face risks from a potentially stronger El Niño during the latter part of the year. According to Caferon, weather conditions in Rondonia remain stable for now, but the period from August to October will be critical, as extreme heat could affect flowering.

Meanwhile, coffee-growing regions in southeastern Brazil, particularly Minas Gerais, are experiencing irregular rainfall, increasing the risk of pest and disease outbreaks. Experts believe Robusta coffee is more heat-tolerant and resistant to pests than Arabica, meaning the impact of El Niño this year is likely to be less severe than in 2024.

Thus, global coffee prices on July 9, 2026 weakened compared with the previous day.
