These days in the mountainous district of Khanh Son, durian farmers are entering the harvest season, traders from everywhere, especially in the West, come here to set up shop, and the trading scene is bustling.
Mr Le Anh Quang, a durian grower in Lien Hoa village, Son Binh commune (Khanh Son district) said, currently, there are 14 purchasing points and gathering points in the commune to facilitate harvesting. Furthermore, this year’s sales are also different than usual. Traders do not settle prices early with garden owners. They will wait until the durian is harvested to give the price, then workers cut it a few days later.
According to Mr Quang, in Khanh Son district, farmers mainly grow durian varieties Monthong and a few varieties such as Chin Hoa and Ri6. For the Ri6 durian area, farmers have almost finished harvesting, selling at an average price of 2,2 – 2,4 USD/kg, an increase of 0,2 – 0,4 USD/kg compared to last year.
As for Monthong durian with its unique quality, yellow rice, flat seeds, and sweet taste, it is just being harvested, the price to buy buckets at the garden ranges from 3 – 3,4 USD/kg (depending on the garden), while last year it was The highest point is about 3,2 USD/kg. If people cut and sell the grade 1 Monthong durian, the price will reach 3,9 – 4,1 USD/kg.
“With the current durian price, along with an average yield of 15 – 20 tons/ha for trees 6 – 7 years old or older, many farmers will win big when they harvest, earning tens of thousands of dollars. Because the investment cost for 1 hectare of durian is only about 12.000 USD” , Mr Le Anh Quang said and added, this harvest, his family has 2 hectares in the second year of business, expected to harvest in 10 days, with an estimated output of nearly 40 tons. With the price of durian remaining stable as it is today, after deducting costs, he mentally calculated the profit to be tens of thousands USD.
Meanwhile, Mr. Yen, also in Lien Hoa village, Son Binh commune, this year will harvest more than 1,000 Monthong and Ri6 durian trees (equivalent to 7 – 8 hectares), expected to have a total output of over 100 tons. Mr Yen said that he has harvested nearly 40 tons of Ri6 durian and nearly 10 tons of Monthong durian. With selling prices from 2,2 – 2,4 USD/kg (Ri6) and 3 – 3,4 USD/kg (Monthong), he will profit around 40,000 USD/hectare so he is very excited.

Mr. Nguyen Quoc Dong, Vice Chairman of Khanh Son District People’s Committee, said that currently the entire district has 2,600 hectares of durian, of which about 1,600 hectares are in business. At this time, Khanh Son durian begins to be in full harvest season, so traders and people from everywhere come, causing motels and rental warehouses to store durians to run out of space.
According to Mr Dong, in this durian harvest, many Khanh Son farmers profit more than 40,000 USD because of good harvest and good prices. “It is estimated that this year, Khanh Son farmers will harvest about 17,000 tons of durians of all kinds, an increase of about 2,000 tons compared to last year. With the current high durian price, farmers in the district can earn over 40 million USD,” Mr. Dong shared.
It is known that Khanh Son durian has the advantage of flowering and fruiting out of season compared to other places, so there is no competition or conflict in the consumer market. Durian harvesting season begins around July every year and ends at the end of August. That means Khanh Son durian is harvested about 1-2 months later than durian in the West and Southeast and 1 month earlier than durian in the Central Highlands. Therefore, when the harvest season comes, traders from all over the region come to buy durian and sell it everywhere, including exporting it to the Chinese market.
In 2023, durian production in Khanh Son district is estimated to reach 15,000 tons, of which official export to China is about 130 tons. The entire district has 5 durian growing area codes approved by the General Department of Customs of China with an area of more than 125 hectares. In recent times, Khanh Son durian has been harvested wherever it is harvested. Recently, Khanh Son’s newly harvested durians immediately sold out.
