(VAN) For the first time, organic nipa palm nectar products from Can Gio have been exported to the US, bringing Vietnam’s native ingredients globally.

Sharing with VAN News on the evening of May 28, Mr Phan Minh Tien, General Director of Vietnam Nipa Palm Joint Stock Company (Vietnipa), said the company had successfully exported its first shipment to the U.S. market, including concentrated syrup, sugar, soy sauce, and caramel coloring made from organic nipa palm nectar.

This is considered a notable milestone in the journey of bringing Vietnam’s native ingredients closer to global consumers.

As consumers worldwide increasingly prioritize natural products with transparent origins and local values, nipa palm nectar, a characteristic ingredient of the Can Gio mangrove biosphere area, is gradually gaining a foothold in the market with a new identity.

Recognizing the potential of this native plant, Vietnipa chose a long-term direction by developing nipa palm nectar into a premium organic product ecosystem that meets international standards and aligns with green consumption trends.

Product lines such as concentrated syrup, nipa palm sugar, caramel coloring, and soy sauce have obtained several international organic certifications, including USDA Organic from the U.S., EU Organic from the European Union, and JAS Organic from Japan.

In addition to expanding internationally, the brand has also made its mark domestically with titles such as Ho Chi Minh City’s 4-star OCOP product, High-Quality Vietnamese Goods, and Outstanding Rural Industrial Product.

According to Mr. Phan Minh Tien, international certifications are not only a “passport” for products to enter global markets but also help affirm the value of Vietnamese nipa palm nectar.

After its line of seasoning and natural sweetener products, Vietnipa continues to expand into the beverage segment with canned fresh nipa palm nectar. This is considered a strategic step to overcome the limitations of many traditional specialties, such as difficulty in preservation and limited access to mass consumers.

The product is designed in a modern, convenient format to target young consumers. In addition to serving as a natural, refreshing drink, canned nipa palm nectar can also be used flexibly in beverage preparation.

“We want nipa palm nectar to go beyond the label of a local specialty and become a familiar ingredient and beverage in modern life. Developing canned products is the next step to expand market access both domestically and internationally,” Mr. Phan Minh Tien shared.

To reach international partners, Mr. Tien said the company has actively participated in many international processed food fairs in Ho Chi Minh City, as well as trade promotion programs organized by the Ho Chi Minh City Investment and Trade Promotion Center. Vietnipa is currently working with several partners from Canada, Australia, China, and Japan to expand its customer base.

Few would think that the lush nipa palm forests of Can Gio, a land associated with Ho Chi Minh City’s distinctive mangrove ecosystem, could now produce internationally certified organic products capable of winning over demanding markets.

According to Mr. Phan Minh Tien, the greatest value the company aims for is not only product commercialization but also the creation of sustainable livelihoods for local people. Previously, nipa palms were mainly harvested for leaves or fresh fruit, with limited economic value. However, research has found that nectar from nipa palm flower stalks is rich in minerals and has strong potential to become a high-value natural sweetener.

Every day, local residents still weave through small creeks in the mangrove forest to collect nectar using traditional manual methods. The harvesting process does not require cutting down trees and does not negatively affect the ecosystem, thereby helping preserve the green landscape of the Can Gio nipa palm forest.

This is also a factor that helps Vietnipa’s products stand out in international markets, where consumers are increasingly concerned about sustainability and the story behind each product.

Vietnipa means Vietnamese Water Coconut, and it originated from the very question: “How can we enhance the value of the nipa palm, develop local agricultural products, help protect the mangrove ecosystem in coastal areas – a natural defense line against saltwater intrusion and climate change – and support local farmers?”

Vietnipa is a pioneering Vietnamese brand developing products from natural organic coconut nectar. A healthy raw material carefully selected from the mangrove ecosystem of Can Gio. Each Vietnipa product aims to nurture the sustainable rhythm of life in nature, the community, and people.
